Shore Cafe - Alkimos

A modern beachside cafe overlooking Alkimos Beach, NORTH OF PERTH.

This bespoke concrete building was designed with reference to the concrete beachfront pavilions built along the Perth coastline in 1970. The considerations were similar; a building that would be sufficiently robust to withstand ocean winds, wind-blown sand, and salt air, but which could unfold to serve food, drinks, and ice cream.

The large ‘shipping container’ doors can be adjusted to open up the building and protect outdoor spaces from the wind during the day. At night, the doors are closed to form a securely locked box.

The café overlooks Alkimos Beach and the doors are painted with murals that draw from the history of “The Alkimos” shipwreck, the last remains of which can still be seen from the beach.

A bright and inviting café, it has become a much loved venue for the Alkimos community.

This project was carried out by Niall while Principal at Studio 53 Architects.
